Second half proved decisive: Slavia lost to Anderlecht

PRAGUE/EDEN ARENA - Promising opening half spoiled by disastrous fourty five minutes after the break. That could be a short summary of Europa League play-off first leg between Slavia and Anderlecht. Goalless draw at half-time turned into 0-3 after the final whistle giving Slavia only little chance for the second leg.
Slavia hoped for rematch for the last meeting with Anderlecht – unsuccessful Champions League qualifier back in 2005. And for most of the first half it looked like the sewn-ones would go to Brussels with a promising result.

Even though manager Dušan Uhrin had to substitute already on 9 minutes, when Frydrych replaced injured Mikula, Slavia played equal part with the Belgians for most of the opening half.

First chance for Slavia came on 29 minutes when Škoda’s header missed the left post. Some three minutes later Frydrych slipped from the right wing and found Kenia inside the penalty area, but our midfielder’s effort was blocked by Nuytinck.

Close to the opening goal came the home side five minutes before the break. Švento lacked only few centimeters on the penalty spot to reach Kenia’s cross and to send it along goalkeeper Davy Roef.

Unfortunately the second half showed much worse performance from the home side. On 50 minutes Anderlecht took lead through Idrissa Sylla who pushed Chipciu’s cross through Pavlenka on the near post.

Twelve minutes later Teodorczyk doubled the advantage for the Belgians with his rebound of Chipciu’s shot from 13 meters against the woodwork.

On 71 minutes Anderlecht captain Hanni added third. He was left alone on 17 meters for a few seconds and Pavlenka had no chance to catch his perfect shot under the bar.

The 0-3 result thus does not let much chance to the second leg in Brussels. Slavia will though try to make a miracle on Thursday 25th on Constant Vanden Stock.

In the second round of the Champions League group stage, Slavia Prague were defeated 0–3 away to Inter Milan at the San Siro. Jindřich Staněk was beaten twice by Lautaro Martínez, a veteran of the sides’ memorable 1–1 draw six years ago, while Denzel Dumfries added a third for the hosts.

Draw 2-2 in the UCL opener against Bodo. Mbodji strikes two

Slavia kicked off their Champions League group stage campaign with a 2–2 draw against Norwegian champions Bodø/Glimt. Jindřich Trpišovský’s side led by two goals — both scored by Youssoupha Mbodji — but the visitors managed to equalize late in the game. Goalkeeper Jindřich Staněk also made a crucial save from the penalty spot while the score was 1–0.
