Slavia against German clubs: Long wait for a win ended

Slavia played 29 games against German clubs in last 51 years. The win against Leverkusen was the first after 22 years.

Slavia won their first gama against Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 six weeks ago and it was our first win against German club since 1998. Last year Slavia lost both their games against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League Group Stage. After a 0-2 loss home in Eden Tomáš Souček managed to score at Signal Iduna Park, but the BVB eventually won 2-1.

Our games against clubs from Germany took place in Intertoto Cup, Cup Winners’ Cup, UEFA Cup, Champions League and this year in the Europa League. The very first game was a friendly one - at Ulrich-Haberland Stadion in Leverkusen. The record? 11 wins, 7 draws and 11 defeats.

UEFA Cup - the predecessor of UEFA Europa League - saw the last Slavia victory over a German club before the game against Leverkusen this year. On 19 September 1998 Slavia defeated Schalke 04 1-0 in Prague and after a 0-1 loss in the opening game, the match continued to a penalty shootout. Radek Černý saved the last penalty by van Hoogdalem, Slavia won 5-4 and qualified for the next round.

Last encounter between Slavia and Bayer 04 Leverkusen before 2020 dates to 1992/93. In Group 9 of Intertoto Cup Slavia drew 0-0 home and won 3-1 away in Leverkusen. Jan Suchopárek scored two goals, Patrik Berger added third.

The very first game between Slavia and Bayer took place in 1969. During our foreign tour to West Germany we drew 1-1 in Leverkusen on 1 August when Herda scored our only goal.
