Hard Lesson in Lyon

LYON/STADE DE LYON - For the very first time in their history, Slavia women reached the quarter-finals of UEFA Women Champions League, but it was a hard experience for ruling Czech champions. Slavia made their quarter-final debut with at two-time UWCL winners Lyon and the brand new Stade de Lyon, opened for UEFA EURO 2016.
Lyon, currently leaders of French Division 1, started well and were to set the pace during the entire game. Slavia held firm for 18 minutes, but then the home side took the lead through Necib with her tremendous drive from distance.

Six minutes later Le Sommer doubled the lead and in 34th minute Hegeberg added third to Barbora Sladká’s net. Sladká had to replace Slavia no 1 Barbora Votíková who was not ready because of injury.

In 38th minute Lyon scored fourth by Mbocke, but Slavia managed to reduce the score just before the break when freshly elected Czech footballer of the year Kateřina Svitková capitalised from Cahynová’s cross.

However the home side in front of 11 thousand spectators did not ease up and added another five goals in the second half. Mbock added her second in 53rd minute and few moments later also Necib added second goal of the night. In the last half-hour two goals by Abily and one more by Hegeberg set the final score at 9-1.

Slavia play the second leg home in Eden Arena on Wednesday, March 30. The kick-off is at 6:30 pm.
