Slavia against German clubs: Third opponent in the last three years

Union Berlin will be our third German opponent in the last three years.

When Slavia won their first game against Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League group stage last year, they ended a 22 year long wait for a win against German club. A year before the Red-Whites lost both their games against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League "group of death". After a 0-2 loss home in Eden Tomáš Souček managed to score at Signal Iduna Park, but the BVB eventually won 2-1.

Our games against clubs from Germany took place in Intertoto Cup, Cup Winners’ Cup, UEFA Cup, Champions League, Europa League and this year in the UEFA Europa Conference League. The very first game was a friendly at Ulrich-Haberland Stadion in Leverkusen in 1969. Overall record from 30 games? 11 wins, 7 draws and 12 defeats.

UEFA Cup - the predecessor of UEFA Europa League - saw the last Slavia victory over a German club before the game against Leverkusen last season. On 19 September 1998 Slavia defeated Schalke 04 1-0 in Prague and after a 0-1 loss in the opening game, the match continued to a penalty shootout. Radek Černý saved the last penalty by van Hoogdalem, the Red-Whites won 5-4 and qualified for the next round.

Last encounter between Slavia and 1. FC Union Berlin dates to 2013. In a friendly game during September internationa break the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
